In recent years a comprehensive new set of requirements for fire protection within the marine industry entered into force. The regulations are designed to ensure that, where possible, fires are prevented from occurring by making sure that furnishing fabrics such as carpets, wall coverings, upholstery, draperies, curtains and other suspended materials will adequately restrict the spread of flame. 

The criteria for levels of fire resistance are set out within the FTP (Fire Test Procedures) Code and testing must be properly conducted by an IMO approved laboratory in compliance with this Code.
